[edit] Test Results

Packed For Sale Available : 3 sets,

Bare M1R3 pcba : 0 pcs

Not yet fixed pcba : 2 pcs

  • all tests log result
  • log for flash
  • read back of standby bitstream about some failed boards
  • Rendering - Boot-to-Rendering step and keeps rendering at least 30 seconds 10 times. i.e. power on -> reconfiguration -> press middle button -> boot up -> rendering (30 seconds) -> power off, be noticed that power-cycle (from power off to power on) is roughly 3 ~ 5 seconds. After this, using test program to do CRC test.

Since Werner has found that all M1rc3 is unlocked in NOR for standby bitstream, see NOR corruption analysis 3/4, a subtle gotcha. From now on(Oct 14th) the M1rc3 being shipped should be checked if the lock bits are really set at the end. so we run a script:

./reflash_m1.sh --lock-flash #for lock the rescue partition without reflash images.

And do a CRC test after 'lockflash', the result also being recorded in each result test.

[edit] Classifications of Failure

  • No VGA sync signals out - 27 / 90: in this rc3, we replaced new U19 and U20 in all boards.
  • Impedance/Current err - 9 / 90: see check here
    • 1 / 9: 0x3e, TP33 (5V) failed by U7 Schimitt-Triggers
    • 4 / 9: 0x59, 0x5d, 0x62, 0x74 TP1 (3V3) failed by usb transceiver, U16 or U17
    • 1 / 9: 0x57, C30 or C36 failed(short), by 0402 footprint not good enough
    • 1 / 9: 0x50, C154 short, by 0805 footprint
    • 1 / 9: 0x31, C104 short, victim by reset rework
    • 1 / 9: 0x33, 2.5V power rail TP2, but works well for overnight rendering.

note that over-current @ 0.53A is the quiescent status(i.e. no any f/w, s/w ported on m1), can be caused by defective usb transceiver.

  • Flash failed - 11 / 90
    • D2/D3 dimly lit after flash with long 1.8smeters usb cable. No such failure happens once used short BEN usb cable.
    • Need to get fully dried after rework/clean work.
    • Stops at 'Bitstream length: 1484404' while flashing; 0x32 got BTN2's signal level is neither 3.3V nor low 0V so that makes reset oscillation( tp36/tp37 to randomly pulse ). See [4]. This result makes me strongly doubted and thought that it's a mix composed by flux and cleaning liquid stocked under BTN2 ball area during several times rework nearby 'reset circuit' to cause it.
    • For TP36(PROGRAM_B_2, ball AA1)/TP37(FLASH_RESET_N) level gets 0 V, it's highly potential that there's mixer to short AA1 ball. For example, AB1 is exactly a GND ball. Caused a never flashed condition, see 0x6D board that could be.
    • For TP36/TP37 is still 3.3V good but in uncompleted flash condition, it's still highly cased by victims from several times of reworks.
  • Clean steps:
1. Using high volatility of liquescent cleanser (i.e. like isopropyl alcohol) to brush the area of reworked pcb surface.
2. Wiping liquid out surrounding reworked area by cloth if seeing liquid there.
3. Using hot air to blow pcb surface to let it dry and bake from higher distance to lower one to close pcb area. Don't not immediately bake pcb surface directly. Or put it overnight or long time.
  • VGA DDC - 6 / 90
    • Needs to be prepared the extended VGA cable (female to male) expendables connected to VGA Monitor's bounded cable, so that frequently replug-in and replug-out connections with m1 boards.
  • Audio Circuit - 2 / 90
    • 0x72: L1 didn't soldered well and Y1 without signals.
  • Ethernet ARP - 1 / 90
    • replugging Ethernet cable can solve it.
  • Video I2C - 1 / 90

0x4d: After used an external pullup 10K on TP15 to 3V3. The VIDEOIN_SDA doesn't still stay steadily at high level. Then used heat air to blow AB17(VIDEO_SDA) ball and passed. It's probably caused by that it's a flux stocked/mixed with volatile cleaner surrounding ball area while several times of reworks nearby 'reset circuit' to cause it.

  • MIDI - 12 / 90: in this rc3, we replaced new U7 in all boards.
    • 10 / 12: failed by defective Schmitt-Trigger IC.
    • 1 / 12: 0x7d, after used reflashed successfully with './reflash_m1.sh --rc3' version "2011-10-14", then TP31 works @ 3.3V correctly
    • 1 / 12: 0x46, failed by a 'foreign body' which mixed and composed of unqualified process while printing soldering balls, see [5].
  • USB - 22 / 90

All impedance to four TPs nearby usb transceiver are M ohm level. If it's not reachable, then usb port would not work well.

  • Rendering - 9 / 90
    • before given a fixable solution for reset circuit, got randomly unconfigurable stage while tested in rendering mode. It's fixed by fix2b circuit patch now.
  • CRC fail
    • 0x66 - 1 / 90

After applied fix2b circuit patch, solved.

[edit] Audio Noise

From RC2 to RC3, we switched the audio codec from National LM4550B to Wolfson WM9707 to reduce audio noise. Audio noise on RC3 is much improved.

[edit] USB Power Switch Circuit

See schematic here : http://en.qi-hardware.com/wiki/Milkymist_One_RC3_Known_Issues#add_USB_Power_Switch Test results with different mouse:

1. FUJITSU model: MP117-P, P/N: AP105808-01, work well only after power-cycle, doesn't work after unplug-and-replug
2. ASUS M/N: M-U0005, P/N: 04G125400280, work well after power-cycle and unplug-and-replug
3. msi M/N: Standard Mouse-SM02, P/N: S12-0400890-AA3, work well after power-cycle, but not every time work well after unplug-and-replug
4. Logitech M/N: M-UAS144, P/N: 810-000728, work well after power-cycle and unplug-and-replug

[edit] Picture Gallary is collected between RC3 and Pre-RC4

Never turn on power if not sure board is dry enough after liquid cleaner used, best to dry by heat air a little if needs to speed up to fix or repair.

[edit] BGA Balls Inspection

Failure boards:

0x32 BGA ball AA4<BTN2> level keeps Hi (3.14V) which must be low normally so that can't be boot up from 0V to 3.3V after pressed middle btn.
0x70 BGA ball AA4<BTN2> level keeps Hi (2.79V) which must be low normally so that can't be boot up, same as 0x32.
0x46 BGA ball AB21<MIDI_RX> signal receives in wrong level.
0x4d BGA ball AB17<VIDEOIN_SDA> signal stays in wrong level.
