one obvious idea is to run gc (GNU calculator) on nano with some optical adaption to have a nice calculator, possibly with RPN or Hewlett-Packard 41C compatibility.
Note Taking Device
Using the nano with basic note-taking software that stores all of the notes in a database sorted by tags for an easy way to record information on the go. You wouldn't even need to start up X, just use the console.
