#qi-hardware IRC log for Monday, 2013-12-30

apeletegood morning10:51
kyakindeed11:07
wpwrak_DocScrutinizer05: ooh, you rolled back to 255 ? damn 8 bit counter registers12:43
DocScrutinizer05huh?12:47
DocScrutinizer05well, usual undo for bogus donations12:48
DocScrutinizer05somebody hit "send" twice, or 4 weeks ago somebody donated and CC finally didn't transfer / did reject12:49
DocScrutinizer05or money transfer didn't arrive after 4 weeks or whatever12:49
DocScrutinizer05Pledged: 53425.00 EUR   Received: 52575.00 EUR   -- click on "255 devices"!12:50
DocScrutinizer05>>subject to corrections for cancelled/rolled-back transactions<<12:51
wpwrak_yes yes, i know. it's just funny to see it dance around the "magic" 1 << 8 :)12:52
DocScrutinizer05Nikolaus back from his short holiday12:53
DocScrutinizer05dnag! tapping the SIM data lines between modem and SIM voids the FCC approval13:22
DocScrutinizer05so **we** can't do that13:22
DocScrutinizer05re http://www.golem.de/news/java-sim-infizierte-sim-karte-schickt-position-alle-fuenf-minuten-1312-103603.html13:23
DocScrutinizer05which is so old it already collected sufficient dust to make the SIM inoperable due to contact problems13:24
wpwrak_i see ... i see ... a few "0R DNP" :)13:25
DocScrutinizer05me too me too13:25
DocScrutinizer05:-D13:25
DocScrutinizer05actually, those 0402 R footprints are pretty confusing when 2 R are parallel to each other ;-)13:26
wpwrak_"for diagnostic purposes" :)13:26
wpwrak_yeah, they are ;-)13:26
DocScrutinizer05you never can tell from the footprints which orientation the Rs are supposed to be13:26
DocScrutinizer05though we need a level shifter13:29
larscapelete: your patch got merged upstream as a christmas present :)14:01
pcercueinice :)14:10
apeletesaw the usb driver got merged for 3.14 indeed, hooray :)14:10
apeletelarsc: now I'm waiting for the mips platform data patches to get merged too14:11
apeletemusb driver feature won't be complete without those14:12
apeletelarsc: are you back from holidays already ?14:13
larscno, I'm at the 30c3 at the moment14:14
apeletewhat's 30c3 ?14:15
larscthe MIPS patches will be merged, I know the person who takes care about this14:15
larscchaos communication congress14:15
larschttps://events.ccc.de/congress/2013/wiki/Main_Page14:15
apeletedidn't knew about that event, thanks for the link14:16
larsclast day today14:16
apeletenice. got back from Paris yesterday, got a couple of holidays left before going back to work14:17
DocScrutinizer05hmm, is there a multiplexer design that does A<->Out for Control=1, B<->Out for Control=0, but A<->Out<->B for Control=highZ  ?14:18
apeletelarsc: didn't have time to work on the nanonote during the week :-(, did a lot of work on the family servers instead :-)14:18
apeleteI hope to get back at it this week14:19
larscI didn't even pack my nanonote14:19
apeleteha ha :)14:19
larscbut somebody gave me one of werners wpan modules14:19
larschere at the congress14:20
apeletenice14:20
Action: DocScrutinizer05 ponders a nifty combination of MOSFETs14:20
wpwrak_larsc: only one ? will be hard to find something to talk to then14:22
larscwpwrak_: yea, a friend said he'll send me a usb dongle14:22
wpwrak_DocScrutinizer05: use two control lines ?14:22
DocScrutinizer05too obvious14:23
apeletelarsc pcercuei: I bought a gcw-zero from qbertaddict on #gcw, things should get even more interesting (and busy) soon14:24
DocScrutinizer05some " 1 1: Not Defined, do not use!" will not suffice ;-)14:24
wpwrak_btw, i threw the reverse-voltage protection FET out of anelok. not only did it produce that mystery resitance to GND but i also realized that it could make low battery situations worse by throttling the battery14:24
DocScrutinizer05reverse voltage protection is always a pain. Only feasible concept: fuse plus clamp diode14:26
wpwrak_one positive feedback loop into disaster less :)14:26
wpwrak_well, cr2032 can do it mechanically if the + contact is on the side and not on top14:26
DocScrutinizer05sure14:26
DocScrutinizer05already wondered what for you need that14:26
DocScrutinizer05btw for a CR2032 you don't even need a fuse14:27
wpwrak_the only risk would then be that the circuit may not like VBAT to be shorted to GND, which is something you could still sneak past a mechanical barrier, at least for a short moment14:27
DocScrutinizer05Z is high enough already14:27
wpwrak_yeah, Z kinda sucks :)14:27
apelete<larsc> the MIPS patches will be merged, I know the person who takes care about this14:29
apeleteI guess you're talking about Ralf Baechle, do you know how he manages his tree ?14:29
DocScrutinizer05I guess a CR2032 must have several dozen Ohms ESR14:29
apeletelarsc: I mean, do you think the patches will be merged for 3.13 or 3.14 instead ?14:30
apelete3.13 is already at rc6, and 3.14 merge window will open in mid-january it seems14:31
larscapelete: ralf is afk for a while, but blogic is taking care of the MIPS tree at the moment14:34
larscblogic asked me if it is ok to merge the patches for 3.14 so I assume they'll be merged14:34
apeleteawesome, thanks for letting me know14:35
larscapelete: http://patchwork.linux-mips.org/project/linux-mips/list/14:35
wpwrak_DocScrutinizer05: about 20 while it's >= 50% full. the it rises slowly to 40, and then skyrockets in the last 10%  or so14:37
apeletelarsc: ok, so I'd better let the process goes on and move onto adding dma for the MMC driver as we talked about14:37
wpwrak_http://data.energizer.com/PDFs/cr2032.pdf14:37
DocScrutinizer05cool14:40
DocScrutinizer05max reverse charge: 1uA. LOL14:41
pcercueihuh, looks like I can't push my changes to gmenu2x' repo14:43
pcercueiPermission denied (publickey).14:44
larscyou still have your ssh key in your list?14:50
larschttp://projects.qi-hardware.com/index.php/preferences/14:50
pcercueiyes I do14:50
pcercueiand it's still the same14:51

whitequark...15:33
kyak"To see the full article you need to subscribe"15:54
kyakso who is putin now? :)15:54
DocScrutinizer05hmmm, not really exciting16:08
viricJudo six dan?16:09
viricI thought he was more of sambo16:10
kyakno, he tricked you into thinking that he is more of a sambo. Typical judo thing!16:50
viricha, crazy war arts16:51
wpwrak_whee, more smoke: http://www.infobae.com/2013/12/30/1534043-espectacular-incendio-una-camara-luz-caballito17:00
wpwrak_yet another electrical substation went up in flames. since nobody could be bothers to turn off the electricity, the firefighters have been waiting for some 1.5 hours without doing anything.17:01
wpwrak_that's .. hmm, within walking distance from my place.let's see if i can see the smoke17:03
viricI remember here when snow made some mid-tension cables fall17:04
viricelectric fire on snow for hours17:04
viricAnd I guess that earth potential difference between your legs could kill you, if you weren't careful17:04
wpwrak_nothing to see17:04
viric"nada que ver"? :)17:05
wpwrak_heh :)17:05
wpwrak_i was looking for the smoke column. but maybe they extinguished it since. that video is from one hour ago.17:05
wpwrak_ah yes, in the second video, 30' later, the smoke is already almost gone17:11
JewFro297Does the wishbone interconnect support connections between multiple clock domains?18:44
Action: whitequark looks at http://leaflabs.com/docs/hardware/maple.html#general and sighs18:59
JewFro297That's quite a depressing mistake19:00
whitequarkthat is a whole list of mistakes...19:01
JewFro297I kept reading... Those are really depressing mistakes19:02
whitequarkfortunately I'm using a chinese clone of the board19:03
whitequarksomehow they were able to get it right on version 1.019:03
JewFro297LOL19:03
JewFro297maybe because they designed it to the advertised specs19:03
wpwrak_it's bad if the clones are earlier and better than the original ;-)19:04
whitequarkwell, iteadstudio (the company who cloned the board) seems to have rather competent engineers in general19:05
whitequarkguess they can't afford incompetence!19:05
metalfreakhi19:08
JewFro297Sup19:09
zrafakristianpaul: hey19:11
zrafakristianpaul: how are you?19:11
wpwrak_hmm. screen dump from my scope: black signals on a black grid with a black background.19:14
JewFro297Seems legit.19:14
JewFro297Anyone know of a good cheap (and I mean really cheap) logic analyzer?19:15
whitequarkbuspirate?19:15
wpwrak_a few leds ? :)19:15
JewFro297Buspirate is pretty, but only appears to support serial transactions19:17
JewFro297Then again, it's still more useful than nothing19:18
DocScrutinizer05those 200bucks USB-"scopes" usually come with 8bit TTL level logic analyzer19:23
DocScrutinizer058bit since that's their internal storage width for the scope signal19:23
DocScrutinizer05aka "resolution"19:23
JewFro297I think there's actually a soft one that Altera has for their FPGAs... I'll have to look into that19:24
whitequarkJewFro297: the question is how high frequency do you need19:25
JewFro297Probably 100MHz. Then again, I might not need anything. It's more of a want19:26
whitequark100MHz is a lot19:27
JewFro297Yeah, I think it's a lost cause to get something cheap with said capability.19:28
DocScrutinizer05those 20bucks USB thingies are usually up to 20MHz19:38
DocScrutinizer05iirc19:38
DocScrutinizer05200bucks even19:38
whitequarkhttp://www.saleae.com/logic16 is $300 and can sample 2ch at 100MHz19:39
whitequarkdunno if it fits your definition of cheap19:40
JewFro297Hmm, actually that looks pretty nice19:42
JewFro297oh but it's only 12.5 on a 16 bit bus19:42
whitequarktheir software is seriously great19:42
whitequarkespecially on *nix19:43
whitequarkhahaha, recall our discussion the other day about hard drives?21:06
whitequark"An implant hidden in the firmware of hard drives from manufacturers including Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung that replaces the Master Boot Record (MBR).21:06
whitequarkhttp://hackaday.com/2013/12/30/hacking-and-philosophy-surveillance-state/21:06
whitequarkalso this: http://www.spiegel.de/static/happ/netzwelt/2014/na/v1/pub/img/Handy/S3222_MONKEYCALENDAR.jpg21:09
habsI'm thinking about buying a Nanonote from Pulster, but I have a few questions before I take the leap. First, are there any firmwares on the Nanonote that aren't free software yet (wheter it be NAND firmware or EC firmware)?  Second, as I understand it the Nanonote doesn't come with a wireless card. What would be a "good enough" wireless card I could buy for the Nanonote that runs with a free firmware?22:08
habsThird, how active is the Nanonote community today? Thanks.22:08
ysionneauwpwrak_ is often doing some nice hacks with the SDIO port22:09
whitequarkhabs: I don't think there is any non-free firmware on Nanonote at all22:09
ysionneauand larsc apelete and maybe others are maintaining/improving/bugfixing the nanonote kernel22:10
whitequarkor actually any firmware except the code running on CPU22:10
wpwrak_(fw) well, the cpu has a boot rom that's closed ...22:14
wpwrak_(wireless) there is this: http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/people/werner/wpan/web/22:14
habsWell, I'm pretty sure you guys' quick response times answered my thrid question; thanks22:33
ysionneau;)22:36
wpwrak_the nanonote community is actually not that active. but there are lots of people around (i.e., here or on the list) who know the nanonote.22:47
zrafahabs: to reply how active comm is you should give us your range of "no-activity" - "activity" :)23:22
